Education in Orissa is imparted by both government and private schools. The Board of Secondary Education of Orissa takes care of the secondary education in the state. However a vast number of schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) also function in the state. The medium of instruction in most of the secondary schools in Orissa is Oriya. While the CBSE and ICSE schools use English as the mode of instruction. In the Oriya medium schools however languages like Hindi and Bengali are also taught as second language.
Some Kendriya Vidyalayas and Schools affiliated to the CBSE and ICSE also offer education up to Std. XI and Std. XII. School admissions generally begins in the months of June / July every year depending on the type of school and programs offered. Almost all schools conduct Unit Tests, Quarterly, Half Yearly and Annual Examinations to access the students.
