Students in fashion merchandising learn how to manufacture, buy, promote, and sell fashion items, from clothing and jewelry to cosmetics and furniture. They also learn about textiles fabrics and the fibers used to make them. With the increase in demand for new clothes, styles and fashion accessories, fashion merchandising is growing as a promising career option these days. Merchandisers basically work as coordinators and are involved in every stage of the garment's development from concept to sales. Merchandisers study buying trends and the buyer's needs, and then liaise between the market and production process. They are involved in business planning and analysis, buyer management, order fulfillment and product development.

Many schools offer diplomas or degrees in fashion merchandising. While diplomas and associate's programs have the advantage of being shorter, a bachelor's degree is a great asset when starting any career. All these courses combine creative skills with knowledge of fashion and marketing trends. There are four-year undergraduate and two-year post-graduate courses in fashion or apparel merchandising. Undergraduate courses are open to students, who have passed their 10+2 exam with any subjects. However, only graduates are eligible for post-graduate courses in fashion merchandising. These courses includes a basic understanding of fabric, fibers, weaves, as well as cutting, sewing, finishing along with a knowledge of international marketing and trade.
Career Prospects of a Fashion Merchandiser
Trained fashion merchandisers can work with any domestic or foreign lifestyle or fashion company. Jobs are also available in ready-to-wear production companies and large retailers/chain stores. Export fabrication companies and export houses also take on merchandisers to coordinate between the foreign retail stores and the production houses. Fashion merchandiser also can work with fashion designer to come up with a new product taking care of the latest trends. They also have good scope in Visual merchandising whereby products are promoted by visual display. Merchandisers also can work in retail management in departmental stores, boutiques, clothing wholesalers, importers, designers and manufacturers. With some experience, fashion merchandisers can even set up their own export houses.
Remuneration in fashion merchandising industry is decided by personal skills and abilities of the person concerned. The normal pay packages of fresh graduates in this industry are Rs 15,000 to 20,000 per month. With some years of experience one can easily reach up to Rs 30,000-40,000 per month. Fashion merchandiser having their own export houses have income based on the size and nature of their business.
