Careers in Biotechnology
A product of recent technological advancement, Biotechnology is a research oriented field. It is basically a combination of biology and technology and includes in itself different subjects like biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, chemistry, immunology, agricultures, soil science etc. Practical applications of biotechnology include developing various medicines, vaccines and diagnostics, making genetically modified seeds, making insecticides, developing healthy breeds of animal in the field of animal husbandry etc.
In India, biotechnology professionals can work in the pharmaceutical companies, agricultural, chemical and allied industries. They can get the employment in the areas of production, planning and management of bio - processing industries. The biotechnologists have a great scope in the research laboratories. The biotechnologists in India get employed in various government-based and private universities and research institutes as research scientists or assistants.
Different courses on biotechnology in India include BSc, MSc, BTech and MTech. To join any of these courses, the minimum qualification needed is 10+2 with , with physics, chemistry and mathematics.Selection into a few universitie that offer BSc in biotechnology is based on merit per ones performance in 10+2. However an admission into the BTech is done through entrance exams.Entrance into IITs is through JEE exams while other institutes conduct their own exams. Many other institutes also recognize JEE scores. Selection to the postgraduate courses ( M.Sc / M.Tech) in different universities is through an All India Combined Entrance exam conducted by JNU, New Delhi and to IIT's through GATE in Two year/ 4 semester M.Tech courses and through JEE in five year integrated M.Tech courses in Biochemical engineering and Biotechnology.
Integrated M.Tech. programme offered at IIT Delhi and Kharagpur is through a Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), which is held for students who have successfully completed the 10+2 or equivalent examination, with physics, chemistry and mathematics. For admission to IIT, a pass in the IIT-JEE is required. The Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, AIIMS, Jadavpur University, Kolkata and Anna University also offers integrated M.Tech course.
Career Prospects in Biotechnology
Biotechnology is a rewarding career venue for students as it opens gates to many different career. They can be employed in pharmaceutical companies, chemical, agriculture and allied industries. Research laboratories whether run by government or corporate sector are the preferred place for many bio-technologists. There they work as research scientists or assistants. There are also many employment opportunities for bio-technologists in government and private sector collages and universities. In private sector they many find employment in company such as pharmaceutical farms, food processing industries, aquaculture and agro based industries. Recently companies like Thapar Group, Hindustan Lever Ltd, Bivcol, India Vaccines Corporation, Indo-American Hybrid seeds, IDPL, Biocon India Ltd, National Botanical Institute, Tata Engineering Research Institute, Hindustan Antibiotics and National Chemical Laboratories have increases the scope of employment for biotech professionals where they can be hired as environmental specialist. Biotechnologists also have the option to join media houses as Science writer.
Biotechnology is a highly remunerative career option. Biotechnologists employed in public sector industries and research institutes have pay packages according to the norms fixed by government. Those working in private sector corporate houses and industries have much lucrative remuneration. Fresh IITians may get Rs. 15,000 to Rs 20,000 per month. Bio tech degree holder of other institutions may get Rs. 10,000 to Rs 12,000 per month. Those employed in teaching have better pay packages which are even very lucrative in private collages and institutions.
